AusCivics Film Festivals 2011 celebrate the Australian way and are part of a national education project under the patronage of the Governor-General of the Commonwealth of Australia.
Young Australians are becoming increasingly disengaged with the systems and values that underpin the Australian way of life. More than 50% of Australia’s youth don’t know or don’t care that Australia is a democracy and 1.4 million eligible voters were not enrolled for the 2010 Federal Election. Record numbers voted informally. These alarming statistics illustrate the need for the AusCivics project.
The House of Representatives determined recently that there is a great need in Australia for a broad based education effort around the Australian Constitution and its direct relevance in making possible our privileged Australian way of life.
AusCivics has been designed as a 10 year national campaign to drive this awareness through the Australian community, with a goal to make civics education, local government and the values that are the foundation of our democracy ‘cool by association’, especially for young Australians.
We hope to see you at an upcoming film festival in your area.
